The one about the spider

Sometimes I wish we could put the kids in a bubble.

In October we were out for dinner at Panera Bread. The weather was perfect, so we decided to eat outside on the patio. After finishing, Baker asked if she could get down from the table. We said yes and she proceeded to run around the entire outdoor eating area. (Fortunately, we were the only people outside.)

At one point she ventured off the concrete, making a loop around a decorative privacy screen. When she was back on the concrete she says, "There's a spider on me." I asked her to come over to us so we could see it. After taking a few steps towards us she stops and looks down. By this time, Josh is walking over to her to see what's going on. He looks down with her and sees a large, black spider crawling away. A large. black. spider. with a red dot on it's belly. A BLACK WIDOW!!

Oh man! At this point the interrogation begins. Josh has to quiz her to find out if it was ever touching her skin, how she knew it was on her, did she feel it bite, etc. Evidently she saw it on her skirt and that's when she told us about the spider. She never felt a bite.

After the interrogation, Josh had to give her a pep-talk about how she should always stay on the concrete in the lit areas -- because there could be spiders in the darkness. I think he made a big enough impact on her about the importance of staying away from spiders ... and I'm just a wee bit concerned she'll have a unnecessary phobia as she grows.
